What is the Right CBD Dosage for Me?
Interested in taking CBD oil but not sure what dose to take? Don’t worry we’ve got you covered.
The question of dosage is a tricky one as there’s no standard formula to follow which will work for everyone. This is one of the aspects of taking CBD oil that new users find the most difficult: it’s often a case of trial and error and working out at what level you feel the best.
However, if you go in with too strong a dose right away, you could be wiped out by the side effects without reaping any of the benefits.
This guide will walk you through CBD dosage and how to find the right level to meet your needs.
A Question of Need
Science is learning all the time about the endocannabinoid system in the body and how it responds to CBD and other cannabinoids. This means that there is a rapidly growing bank of reasons why users may be turning to CBD.
Different doses can produce different effects so your reason for use could influence the dose you decide to take.
Although everyone should start low and build up, your end goal may be to take low, medium or high-strength CBD, depending on your needs.
As a rough rule of thumb:
- Low strength = general health and wellbeing
- Medium to high strength = supporting sleep and balancing health
- High strength = more significant health concerns
Understanding the Dose
It’s not as simple as buying any bottle of CBD and taking one or two drops. To calculate your dose you need to know exactly how much CBD is in each bottle. Different strengths are available so it’s vital to check the labelling carefully before working out how much to take.
You should always start off with a dose which is very low, even if it’s below what you think will be effective. This is to allow your body to adjust to the CBD and to prevent significant side effects from developing.
Some people may experience mild side effects when they first take CBD such as dizziness, dry mouth or loss of appetite. This should wear off very quickly if you start with a low dose. Many people don’t notice any side effects at all.
To be able to calculate the correct dose, you will need to know how much CBD is in 1ml - this is the usual size of a dropper.
Calculating Your Dose
One way to calculate your dose is by using your body weight. This can be an effective measure but it’s not completely foolproof. Two different people of the same weight may metabolise CBD in different ways so you should still take care to listen to your body and how CBD is working.
Low strength = 1mg per 10lbs/4.5kg
Medium strength = 3mg per 10lbs/4.5kg
High strength = 6mg per 10lbs/4.5kg
Start by taking just two to three drops of CBD oil per day. This may sound low but it’s the best way to introduce it to your body without swamping your endocannabinoid system.
Every 2-3 days, increase the dose by 5mg and see how you feel. If you start to feel worse, drop back down to the previous dose. A higher dose isn’t always more effective.
Frustrating though it may be, a slow and steady approach is far more beneficial than going in hard. It will also save you money in the long run as you’ll find the lowest dose at which CBD is effective for you!
